What do sharp-tongued barbs, quick-witted comebacks and 1950s hair styles all have in common? They’re all part of Stage North’s upcoming production of William Shakespeare’s ribald comedy, The Taming of the Shrew. Being a traditional Bard comedy set in the Golden Era of the 50s, this show is sure to be a crowd pleaser.

At its heart, the play is a love story wrapped in layers of deception, disguise and the occasional cross dressing page. The vision of director, Dawn Ljuden, is to transport the language and comedic timing of Shakespeare to a different time and place. With the assistance of a stellar cast and crew, including lead actors Ted Sloan and Sarah Lyons in the roles of Petruchio and Katherina respectively, Dawn intends to bring a new twist to this classic and timeless show.

Stage North is rehearsing The Taming of the Shrew in their newly acquired rental space on the East Bypass Road. Sean and Bronwen Surerus have invited Stage North to move into a large shop building on their property for a very reasonable rental fee.  Moving of props, costumes, flats and set construction tools and supplies was a monumental job over the summer months.

The production crew, fondly referred to as the Shrew Crew, is under the direction of producer Karma Pratt and set construction volunteer Tony Atkins. Karma commented recently that, “Getting ready for a show with a cast of 23 and a crew of 10 is a huge job in itself but everyone has taken the extra load (of moving) in stride and helped out with lifting and c

arrying lumber, furniture, and boxes, boxes and  more boxes.” Volunteers of Stage North spent this past weekend getting the last of the move completed.

The Taming of the Shrew runs November 8, 9, 14, 15 & 16 at the North Peace Cultural Centre. Tickets are available in person at the Cultural Centre box office, online at tickets.npcc.bc.ca or by calling 250-785-1992. Tickets are $25 for adults, $20 for seniors & students, or $15 for children. All shows begin at 7pm .
