Artist Statement: As an immunization nurse, I am aware of the heavier burden carried by women during the current extended Covid restrictions. A mother gazes out the window watching her children at play. She braces herself against the window frame seeking the courage and strength to withstand the extra responsibilities of working from home, or, for so many women, experiencing the first job cuts and wondering how to make ends meet. She knows the importance of Dr. Bonnie Henry’s mantra to “Be kind. Be calm. Be safe” and prays for the day everyone can be vaccinated and once again feel as free as the birds in flight.

The image is painted onto a clay tile – my first attempt at working with coloured clay. The resulting abstracted squares create an ideal background to reinforce the theme of an unequal world.
