Artist Statement: Cheery House Vase is one in a series of house form series that I am continuing. Vases are one of my favourite vessels to make and seemed a good way to begin my exploration of home. Having spent nearly all my time at home for over a year now, I have been thinking more about houses and homes. While I previously looked at a lot of art including houses tied to ideas around gentrification or private vs. public space, this past year has made me think of houses more as a refuge while also as an enclosure at the same time. This particular vase has a cheerful orange exterior because I love the varied shapes and colours of houses found in the Maritimes, and because I wanted it to feel warm, whimsical and welcoming.
