Artist Statement: With Seed Pods, I was exploring ways of creating from home, as the pandemic kept me out of our guild studio, both through provincial restrictions and personal choice. Making small pieces at home, rounded shapes that were comforting to handle felt right. These pods are finished through smoke firing – a new to me technique that is relatively low tech and done outdoors, which allowed me to test this with my fellow guild members. The simple forms, treated with terra sigilata, burnished, bisque fired, decorated with tape and raku slip resist prior to smoke firing, required patience and simplicity. Reuniting with guild members to create seems to me linked to seed pods, looking forward to new growth. They feel hopeful.
